Music by Rodgers, Richard | Lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II | Book by Howard Lindsay and Russel Crouse | Adapted by Tom Briggs and Timothy Allen McDonald | Suggested by "The Trapp Family Singers" by Maria Augusta Trapp
The Sound of Music - The Getting To Know Series: Uniquely adapted musicals specifically for youth performers. The final collaboration between Rodgers & Hammerstein was destined to become the world's most beloved musical. When a postulant proves too high-spirited for the religious life, she is dispatched to serve as governess for the seven children of a widowed naval Captain. Her growing rapport with the youngsters, coupled with her generosity of spirit, gradually captures the heart of the stern Captain, and they marry. Upon returning from their honeymoon they discover that Austria has been invaded by the Nazis, who demand the Captain's immediate service in their navy. The family's narrow escape over the mountains to Switzerland on the eve of World War II provides one of the most thrilling and inspirational finales ever presented in the theatre. The motion picture version remains the most popular movie musical of all time. In this adaptation for pre-high school students, the content has been edited to better suit younger attention spans, but all the elements that make this show a classic are still in place. You and your students will be enchanted by the timeless story and the dazzling score, while at the same time learning about theater and its production.
Special Note: Students in K-3 class will need to read the script during rehearsals and studying at home.
Students in the third grade have the option to choose either the Grades K-3 or the Grades 3-5 options.
COURSE DESCRIPTION: HITS Theatre Productions are a chance for students to practice their acting, singing and dancing skills through a traditional rehearsal process. Each production is supported by a professional director, choreographer, music director, stage manager, and designers. As an ensemble, the students each play an important role in telling a story for a live audience by learning music, choreography, and staging. Our professional creative team guides our students through character development, proper vocal technique and strengthening motor skills & coordination.
AUDITIONS/PLACEMENTS: Casting will occur during the first 2 rehearsals. All students will read lines from the script and learn a short vocal & dance combination to assess skill levels. Students are not expected to prepare anything for auditions, but some have found taking private voice and acting lessons helpful to boost confidence on audition days. This semester, we are offering a one-hour audition preparation class during our parent orientation meeting. See specific class for exact dates and times.
PREREQUISITE: All first-time HITS theater students must concurrently register for EXPLORING MUSICAL THEATER or MUSICAL THEATER JR. WORKSHOP or have completed these classes in the previous semester. All registrations are subject to approval or removal by the Artistic Director; prerequisites may be waived based on a skill assessment by HITS Artistic staff.
